Joseph S. Almeida, Jr. (b. September 23, 1957) is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 12. He was first elected to the chamber in 1998.

He formerly represented District 12 from 1999-2010, but regained his seat in 2012. He previously served as Deputy Majority Leader.

Biography

Almeida earned his B.A. from Roger Williams College in 1990. His professional experience includes working as a financial strategist, as a patrolman for the Providence Police Department from 1979 to 1995 and as the owner of Essence Construction. Almeida served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marines from 1978-1985.[1]

Almeida was a sponsor of the Rhode Island Name Change Amendment (2010), saying, "It's high time for us to recognize that slavery happened on plantations in Rhode Island and decide that we don't want that chapter of our history to be a proud part of our name."[2]

Almeida won re-election in the 2012 election for Rhode Island House of Representatives District 12. Almeida defeated incumbent Leo Medina in the September 11 Democratic primary and was unopposed in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.[3] The general election is on November 6.[4]

Almeida ran unsuccessfully for re-election to the 12th District Seat in 2010. Leo Medina defeated him in the primary election.[5] Medina faced no opposition in the general election on November 2, 2010.

In 2008, Almeida was re-elected to the Rhode Island House District 12. Almeida (D) ran unopposed and finished with 3,153 votes.[6] Almeida did not raise any money for his campaign fund.[7]
