Joseph P. Gill (b. August 30, 1957 in Buffalo, NY) is the current Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources. He was appointed by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) and sworn in on May 21, 2013. Gill was appointed to replace previous secretary John Griffin, who resigned in order to accept a new position as O'Malley's Chief of Staff.[1] The appointment is subject to approval by the Maryland State Senate.


Gill is a native of Buffalo, New York. He attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate degree and in 1982 he graduated cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center. Gill began his career as a law clerk for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and later earned admission to the Maryland Bar.[2] In 1987, Gill took a job with the Maryland Attorney General's office as Assistant Attorney General in Contract Litigation. He eventually became Deputy Counsel for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.[3]

Political career

Secretary of Natural Resources (2013-present)

Gill assumed office as Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources on May 21, 2013. He succeeded six-year officeholder John Griffin upon Griffin's appointment as Chief of Staff to Governor O'Malley.

Prior to his appointment, Gill served as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources from 2010-13, and Principal Counsel to the Department of Natural Resources from 1996-2010.[2][4]



Gill was appointed secretary by Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) on May 21, 2013. His appointment must be confirmed by the state senate.[5]


Gill resides in Severna Park, Maryland with his wife, Patty Brown. He has two daughters and is a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church.[2][3]
