McLaughlin was a Republican candidate for District 81 of the New York State Assembly. The primary election was on September 14, 2010, and the general election was on November 2.

McLaughlin ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House, representing New York's 16 District. He sought the nomination on the Republican Party tickets.[2] He was unopposed in the primaries and faced incumbent Eliot Engel (D) and Joseph Diaferia (G) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[3] Engel won.[1] He was defeated by Eliot Engel on November 6, 2012.[4]
