Wendel ran for Texas Railroad Commission in 2012. He was unopposed for the Green Party nomination. Incumbent Barry Smitherman, Greg Parker, Al Lee and Elizabeth Murphy-Kolb all sought the Republican nomination. Since no candidate won more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote getters - Smitherman and Parker - faced off in a runoff election on July 31,[1] which Smitherman won.

Smitherman was victorious over Wendel and Jaime Perez in the general election on November 6, 2012.[2]
