Kalamazoo Transit Authority Levy Proposal (November 2009)
The Kalamazoo Transit Authority sought to add a $.60 tax on all property in the city of Kalamazoo in order to help fund and provide public transportation services. This tax would be in place for three years once it is approved and would begin in 2010.
The question on the ballot was, "Shall the City of Kalamazoo Transit Authority, County of Kalamazoo, Michigan levy as a new millage, an amount not to exceed Sixty Cents ($.60) per thousand dollars ($1,000) (.60 mill) of the Taxable Value of all taxable property in the City of Kalamazoo for a period of three years, for 2010, 2011 and 2012, to provide for public transportation services, including limited evening services? Since it was approved, it will be levied in its entirety in 2010, this millage would raise approximately $998,442 for the Transit Authority."
This tax will help fund 18 bus routes in the city and would generate $1 million annually to help fund these services. This is the second part of a tax levy which voters approved in May, also helping to fund public transportation in the city.
