Landlocked and located in the Midwest region of the United States, the state of Kansas was admitted the Union as a free state in 1861. Named after the Kansa Native American tribe, Kansas is currently one of the most agricultural productive states and is nicknamed the “Sunflower State.” Currently, Kansas has two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, four Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 125 members of the Kansas House of Representatives and 40 members of the Kansas State Senate. As of September 2013, Kansas is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.

The structure of the Kansas judicial system is laid out in Article 3 of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the Kansas Supreme Court, the Kansas Court of Appeals, the Kansas District Courts and the Kansas Municipal Courts.


The federal court system is made up of the United States District Court for the District of Kansas and the District of Kansas Bankruptcy Court. Appeals from these courts go to the Tenth Circuit.
