Gibbs won election in the special election for Mississippi House of Representatives District 36. The seat was vacant following David Gibbs's death on January 13. Gibbs won against Jeannie Johnson Staten, Eddie Longstreet, Bobbie C. Davis, Roderick Van Daniel, and Jimmy Davidson in the special election which took place on March 12, 2013. As no candidate won more than fifty percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters - Gibbs and Eddie Longstreet - met in a runoff election on April 2, which Gibbs won.[2]
