Shankland won election in the 2012 election for Wisconsin State Assembly District 71. She defeated Laura Hauser-Menting, Corey Ladick, Tom Mallison, Jerry McGinley, Hans Schmid, Andrew Beveridge, Robert Steinke, and David Verhage in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012. Patrick Testin ran unopposed in the Republican primary. Incumbent Democrat Louis Molepske, Jr. did not run for re-election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[1]
