Welcome to Kentucky on Ballotpedia!

Officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the state the Kentucky was originally part of the state of Virginia. Having been admitted into the Union in 1782 as its 15th state, Kentucky boasts two major cities: Louisville and Lexington. Nicknamed the “Bluegrass State” because of its vast pastures, Kentucky is famous for its bourbon distilleries, horse racing, automobile making and bluegrass music. Currently, Kentucky has two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, a total of six members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 100 members of the Kentucky House of Representatives and 35 members of the Kentucky State Senate. As of September 2013, Kentucky is one of 13 states that is under divided government and does not have a state government trifecta.
