Sykes faced fellow Republicans Bobby Banks, Emory West Dunahoo, Jr., Dominic Ottaviano, Todd Reed, and William Sykes. Paul Godfrey also ran for the seat as a Democrat. Since no candidate received a majority of the vote on November 8, the top two vote getters--Banks and Dunahoo--proceeded to a runoff election on December 6.[2][3]
