On November 4, 2008, Ray won election to the Florida House of Representatives from Florida's 17th District, defeating Regina Young (D) and John Rosso (write-in). Ray received 47,138 votes in the election while Young received 26,792 votes, and Rosso received 16 votes.[5] Ray raised $256,284 for his campaign; Young raised $11,145.[6]
