As of 2014, there are roughly 13,600 public school districts in the United States.[1] These districts collectively include about 55.2 million students. Nearly half of those students (48.3%) reside in the top 1,000 school districts in the nation.

Every state except Maine and Vermont have at least one school district that is represented in the top 1,000 districts.
