This page is a list of Initiative to the Legislature, a type of ballot measure seen in Washington.

Background

In 1912, citizens in Washington approved the right to initiative and referendum by a 71 to 29 percent split.

The first Initiative to the Legislature, advocating the relaxation of alcohol prohibition laws, was filed on December 14, 1914, went to the ballot on the November 7, 1916 ballot, and was defeated.[1]

Since that beginning, through June of 2012 on the ballot, Washington citizens had filed 521 Initiatives to the Legislature. Only 27 have been sent to the ballot, while three were approved directly by the legislature.[2][3]
