Louis Maietta is a Republican candidate in the special election for the Maine State Senate, District 7. Maietta is running to fill the vacancy created when Larry Bliss resigned to take a job in San Francisco, California.[1]

Maietta is a South Portland native and former state representative. After studying at Southern Maine Community College, he worked as a fireman and dispatcher. He then went on to work in his family's construction company and eventually began investing in real estate. He was elected to the city council in 1999 and the Maine House of Representatives in 2002. Maietta volunteers, promoting breast and prostate cancer awareness. He is married to his wife, Jane. They have three children.[2]

Campaign themes

Maietta's 2011 special election campaign site emphasizes several key policy positions and campaign themes:

  • Keep our Families in Maine: "Let’s make forward progress and invest in education for our children. Our communities care deeply about local education and we can do better to provide good jobs for graduates. Maine is great place to live, we have four unique seasons, low crime and independent thinking. Now we just have to provide the channel for job growth."
  • Shoreline and Waterways: "We are lucky to live in a pristine part of the United States. We must work to balance our waterfront resources and inland waterways for recreation and business. What does that mean? Investing in upgrades to our infrastructure that will protect our environment."
  • Independent Voice: "Louie believes, like most of his neighbors in District 7, state government must put aside partisan bickering and get back to business. Louie’s record of logical, independent choices represents the district, not a political party. In fact, Louie supporters include local prominent democrat and independent leaders."
  • Streamline Business: "Many ask, “why isn’t our government effective?” The simple answer is small and large businesses out-pace the capacity of government. We need to make our state more responsive to new and current business owners."
