Rodriguez was involved in a street gang in East Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s. He was imprisoned for some off the crimes he committed during this era when he was 18 years old. He went on to a career in journalism after being released. He later became an author of several genres and political activist. His memoir about gang life, "Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.," was published in 1993, and was ranked number 63 on the American Library Associations's "Top 100 Banned/Challenged Books: 2000-2009" list.

Rodriguez is running for election to the office of Governor of California. Rodriguez is seeking the Green Party nomination in the primary on June 3, 2014. The general election takes place on November 4, 2014.
Rodriguez is married to his third wife, Trini Rodriguez. He has four children: Ramiro, Andrea, Ruben and Luis. Ramiro is incarcerated in an Illinois State Prison.
