Race background

Democratic incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown is seeking election to a fourth non-consecutive term in the office. Brown is the longest-serving governor in California history as of October 2013.[4]

Including Brown, fifteen candidates filed for the June 3 top-two California Gubernatorial primary election. Among the small fraction of these candidates whose qualifications indicated they could match wits with someone as experienced as Brown, one, Laguna Hills Mayor Andrew Blount (R), withdrew from the race one month before the primary, citing health issues. Bount's exit left a total of fourteen hopefuls, none with any actual hope of unseating Brown in the general election. California Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R) and former Treasury official official Neel Kashkari (R) both proved to be formidable campaigners, however the odds of an upset by Kashkari, who scored the second nomination in the primary after Brown, are extremely unlikely.[5]

Throughout the primary campaign season, polls underscored projections of Brown's strong standing to win a record-breaking fourth term as California's chief executive in 2014. A Field Poll released in early April put Brown 40 percentage points ahead of what appeared to be his biggest competitor, Tim Donnelly. Brown drew 57% to Donnelly's 17%, with ex-candidate Blount at 3% and Kashkari at 2%. The final poll before the primary conducted for USC and the Los Angeles Times foreshadowed Donnelly's demise, pushing Kashkari into second place overall at 18%, with Donnelly at 13% and Brown holding tight at 50%.[6] Around this time, the Cook Political Report released a new round of 2014 Governors Race Ratings California and rated California as "Solid Democratic."[7]
