Welcome to Maine on Ballotpedia!

The Maine Constitution structures Maine's state government, composed of three co-equal branches—the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Nicknamed the "Pine Tree State," the state of Maine is located in the New England region in the northeastern area of the United States. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, New Hampshire, Quebec and New Brunswick, Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost part of New England. Known for its seafood and scenery, Maine is home to Acadia National Park. Currently, Maine has two members of the U.S. Senate, two members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 153 members of the Maine House of Representatives and 35 members of the Maine State Senate. As of September 2013, Maine is one of 13 states that is under divided government and does not have a state government trifecta.
