The 1st congressional district of Maine will hold an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.

Primary: Maine has a closed primary system, in which the selection of a party's candidates in an election is limited to registered party members.

Voter registration: There is no deadline for in-person voter registration, but the cut-off for registration by mail is October 16.[1]

Incumbent: Heading into the election the incumbent is Chellie Pingree (D), who was first elected in 2008.

This will be the first election using new district maps based on 2010 Census data. Maine's 1st congressional district encompasses Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and York counties. Additionally, the district includes most of Kennebec county.[2]

On November 2, 2010, Pingree won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. She defeated Dean Peter Scontras (R) in the general election.[9]
