The Maine Public Utilities Commission is a regulatory board in the Maine state government. The commission is responsible for regulating electric, natural gas, telecommunications and water utilities in Maine. It was created by the Legislature in 1913.[1]

Current officeholder

The current Chairman of the commission is Thomas Welch. He was appointed in April 2011, with his term ending in March 2017. Commissioners include Vendean Vafiades and David Littell.

Appointments

The three commissioners are appointed by the Governor of Maine and subject to review by the Legislature's Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee and confirmation by the Legislature.[1]

They serve six year staggered terms.

Compensation

In 2010, Maine Public Utilities Commissioners were paid an estimated $117,104 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
