JUNEAU, Alaska: The issue of marijuana legalization has spread to the coldest part of the country.

An Alaska Marijuana Legalization Measure may appear on the 2014 statewide election ballot as an indirect initiated state statute. The measure would decriminalize the use of marijuana in the state.[1]

The plans to try to place the measure on the ballot were announced by the Marijuana Policy Project around mid-January 2013.

The initiative effort must collect 30,169 signatures by January 2014 in order to be sent to the Alaska State Legislature. If the legislature chooses not to enact the measure, it would be placed on a 2014 ballot.
