Marilyn B. Tavenner (b. May 31, 1951, in Martinsville, Virginia) is the current Administrator of the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 15, 2013, by a vote of 97-1.[1] She was the first confirmed administrator since 2006 and the first Democrat confirmed in 15 years.[2]

Tavenner was first nominated to the position in 2011 and was acting administrator until she was nominated again and confirmed.[2] She previously worked for the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) for 25 years.[3]


Tavenner earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University before working for the HCA for 25 years.[3]
