Brnovich earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Arizona State University and his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego School of Law.
He was in charge of the state department of gaming for Arizona from 2009-2013, when he resigned in anticipation of running for attorney general in 2014. His history has not been limited to state government, however. Brnovich previously worked for the high-profile conservative Goldwater Institute as well as the private-prison firm Corrections Corporation of America.

Brnovich announced his candidacy for Attorney General of Arizona on October 2, 2013. He sought the Republican nomination in the primary on August 26, 2013. Brnovich was the only declared primary challenger for incumbent Tom Horne as of his entry in the race. The general election took place November 4, 2014.
