Gjonaj ran in the 2012 election for New York State Assembly District 80. He defeated incumbent Naomi Rivera (who also ran on the Working Families Party ticket), Irene Estrada-Rukaj, and Adam R. Bermudez in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2012. He defeated Nicole J. Torres, Patrick A. McManus, and William Edstrom in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012. [2][3]
