Challenge to opponent
Murphy's opponent, incumbent Michael Grimm, initially attempted to file as an Independence Party candidate as well as Republican, but Murphy's objection to Grimm's petition signatures successfully knocked Grimm from that line. Grimm remained on the ballot as a Republican, and the Independence Party line was blank on the ballot. Grimm defeated Murphy in the general election.
