O'Kray made her career as an educator, serving in various positions in the Roseville Community Schools. Starting as an elementary school teacher, she retired in 2001 as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
O'Kray was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2001, cited for finding "practical ways to solve problems" as well as "outstanding service" to her district.
O'Kray is running in the 2012 election for Michigan House of Representatives District 33. She is running unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 7. The general election takes place on November 6, 2012. 
O'Kray and her husband Norman have two children, and are also grandparents.
