Martin M. Looney (b. July 23, 1948) is a Democratic member of the Connecticut State Senate. He joined the Connecticut State Senate in 1993 and has served in that position since. In 1995 he served as Senate Assistant Minority Leader. He has been Senate Majority Leader since 2002, representing the 11th district.

Looney was Treasurer for the New Haven Democratic Town Committee from 1976 to 1978. He served in the Connecticut State House of Representatives from 1980 to 1992.

Looney earned his BA in English and Theology from Fairfield University in 1970. He went on to receive his MA in English from the University of Connecticut in 1972. He then earned his JD from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1985.

Looney worked as a Practitioner in Residence for the Department of Public Safety and Criminal Justice Program at the University of New Haven. He was a Public Information Aide for the City of New Haven from 1976 to 1980. He has been an attorney for Keyes, Looney, and Murphy from 1985 to the present. He has also been Adjunct Faculty for the University of New Haven since 1998 and for Quinnipiac College since 2001.

Looney is running for re-election to the 11th District Seat in 2010. He has no primary opposition. Matthew J. Corcoran is running for the seat on the Republican ticket. The general election takes place on November 2, 2010.


On November 4, 2008, Looney won re-election to the 11th District Seat in the Connecticut State Senate unopposed.[1]
