Mary S. Martin was a 2013 Independent candidate for District 14 of the Virginia House of Delegates.[1]

Issues

Educator Fairness Act

Martin called the Educator Fairness Act, supported by incumbent Delegate Danny Marshall, III, "anything but fair to teachers" and said it neither encouraged teachers to come to the state or teachers already in Virginia to stay.[2][3]

Utility and electricity price increases

According to Martin, the reregulation of Appalachian Power by the legislature in 2007 allowed the utility to dramatically increase electric bills. Martin has testified before the state legislature on this issue, and continues to express concern for those on fixed incomes facing these rising costs.[3][2]

Uranium mining

Martin announced her opposition to uranium mining in the state in her initial declaration of candidacy, noting that she wanted to make her position known early in the campaign.[3][2]

Conflict of interest rules

Observing that local boards have conflict of interest rules and recusal requirements for issues that might present a conflict of interest, Martin said in her announcement that she was disappointed that no requirement apparently exists at the state legislative level. Martin pledged to work to create stronger conflict of interest rules for the legislature.[3][2]
