The Maryland Governor heads the executive branch of the government of the U.S. state of Maryland and is commander-in-chief of the state's military forces. He or she is the highest ranking official in the state, and has a broad range of appointive powers in state and local government, as provided by the state's constitution. Because of the extent of these constitutional powers, the governor of Maryland has been ranked among the most powerful governors in the United States.

The current officeholder is Martin O'Malley.

Qualifications

The term of office of the governor of Maryland is four years. The state constitution prohibits a governor from serving more than two consecutive terms.
