The Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources
is a state executive position in the Maryland state government. The Secretary serves as head of the Department of Natural Resources and is responsible for overseeing the preservation, development and use of Maryland's natural resources.
The current officeholder is John Griffin. He was appointed by Gov. Martin O'Malley in 2007.
The Secretary of Natural Resources is appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate.
The Department coordinates all natural resources activities within the State and reviews and evaluates all natural resources policies, plans, programs, and practices of county, State, regional and federal agencies and institutions.
The Department of Natural Resources is divided into three main programs:
- Aquatic Resources
- Land Resources
- Mission Support
In 2010, the Maryland Secretary of Natural Resources was paid an estimated $148,787 according to the Council of State Governments.
