BOSTON, Massachusetts: While the Senate race in Massachusetts generated much attention, one candidate argued that his presence in the election yielded much impact. In an interview before polls closed, Libertarian candidate Joe Kennedy stated that his campaign would usher Republican candidate Scott Brown into office, arguing that the votes he would receive would pull votes from Martha Coakley more than Brown.[1]
Despite Kennedy's claims, results showed that Kennedy pulled in 1 percent of the votes, with 97 percent of precincts reporting. Before the numbers came in after the election, Kennedy stated: “We’ll be happy with whatever we get (tonight). We made a statement. People listened.” Although the results of the race and several e-mails calling for him to drop out, Kennedy stated he never seriously considered doing so. Brown won the Senate race on January 19, 2010.[2]
