The office of secretary of education is established by Part I, Title II, Chapter 6A, Section 14A of the General Laws of Massachusetts:[1]

The executive office of education shall be under the supervision and control of a secretary of education, in this section called the secretary.

In accordance with Part I, Title II, Chapter 6A, Section 14A of the General Laws of Massachusetts, the secretary is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the governor.

Compensation

In 2010, the Massachusetts Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education was paid an estimated $154,500 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
