The Massachusetts Secretary of Education is a state executive position in the Massachusetts state government. The Secretary directs the Executive Office of Education and oversees the state's three education agencies - the Department of Early Education and Care, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Department of Higher Education - and the University of Massachusetts.

The Executive Office of Education and the position of Secretary of Education were proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick (D) and established on March 10, 2008.[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Paul Reville. He has served in this position since 2008.


The office of secretary of education is established by Part I, Title II, Chapter 6A, Section 14A of the General Laws of Massachusetts:[2]

The executive office of education shall be under the supervision and control of a secretary of education, in this section called the secretary.


In accordance with Part I, Title II, Chapter 6A, Section 14A of the General Laws of Massachusetts, the secretary is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the governor.


In 2010, the Massachusetts Secretary of Education was paid an estimated $154,500 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
