Massachusetts is one of 21 states with a mixed primary system. Unaffiliated voters are allowed to vote in the primary election. They may choose which party ballot they wish to vote on and still remain unaffiliated.

The treasurer is responsible for maintaining the state funds by investing and maintaining the state budget. The department is divided into seven divisions, abandoned property, board of retirement, the water pollution abatement trust, debt management, deferred compensation, financial education and cash management.
The Auditor's office is responsible for conducting financial, performance and technical audits of state programs, departments, agencies and other uses of public money.
