Jones was a Democratic member of the Colorado House of Representatives. He represented the 12th district from 2011 to 2013. He previously served from 1986 to 1993 as well.

Jones earned his BA in Political Science from Colorado State University. He went on to receive his MA in Natural Resource Policy from Colorado State University.

Jones is a part-time wildland firefighter. He has also worked as an open space and trails planner.

Jones won election to the Colorado State Senate in 2012.
