Van Buren ran in the 2012 election for Wisconsin State Assembly District 34. He defeated Roberta Retrum in the Democratic primary on August 14, 2012. Incumbent Republican Dan Meyer did not run for re-election. Van Buren was defeated by Rob Swearingen (D) in the general election on November 6, 2012.
