Comstock was a Republican candidate for District 32 of the Montana State Senate. The primary election was on June 8, 2010 and the general election was on November 2.
Comstock switched parties from Republican to Democratic by filing to run as a Democrat in the 2012 elections. He said that he is "running as a Democrat so he can change the 'would-be communists' from within".

Comstock ran in the 2012 election for Montana State Senate, District 34. Comstock ran unopposed in the June 5 primary election and was defeated by Scott Sales (R) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.
