Fitzgerald ran for re-election as state treasurer in 2014.[4] He was unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the June 3 primary. The general election took place November 4, 2014.

He had first considered a bid for Governor of Iowa in the 2014 elections. He gave himself a deadline of Labor Day of 2013 to make his decision about joining the race, and on August 30, 2013, he announced that he would not be running.[2] Fitzgerald did not even put together an exploratory committee, instead looking to friends and supporters for advice about the decision.[3]

Fitzgerald was re-elected as Iowa Treasurer on November 2, 2010.[5]
