Welcome to Michigan on Ballotpedia!

Located in the Great Lakes region of the U.S., the state of Michigan is governed as a republic, with three branches of government: the executive, legislative and the judicial. The Michigan Constitution also allows for the direct participation of the electorate by statutory initiative and referendum, recall and constitutional initiative and referral. Admitted into the Union in 1837 as the 26th state, Lansing is the state capital and Detroit is its largest city. Currently, Michigan has two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, a total of fourteen members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 110 members of the Michigan House of Representatives and 38 members of the Michigan State Senate. As of September 2013, Michigan is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
