Welcome to Michigan on Ballotpedia!

Located in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States, the state of Michigan is governed as a republic, with three branches of government: the executive, legislative and the judicial. The Michigan Constitution also allows for the direct participation of the electorate by statutory initiative, referendum, recall, constitutional initiative and referral. Admitted to the Union in 1837 as the 26th state, Lansing is Michigan's capital and Detroit is Michigan's largest city.

Michigan has two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of fourteen members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 110 members of the Michigan House of Representatives and 38 members of the Michigan State Senate.
