The Michigan Medical Marihuana Act allow the medical use of marihuana to critically ill patients.

It would also:

  • Allow terminally and seriously ill patients use it with their doctors' approval.
  • Protect patients from arrest and prosecution
  • Permit qualifying patients or their caregivers to cultivate their own marijuana for their medical use, with limits on the amount they could possess.
  • Create registry identification cards, so that law enforcement officials could easily tell who was a registered patient, and establish penalties for false statements and fraudulent ID cards.
  • Allow patients and their caregivers who are arrested to discuss their medical use in court.
  • Keep commonsense restrictions on the medical use of marijuana, including prohibitions on public use of marijuana and driving under the influence of marijuana.

Background

Michigan has already passed local medical marijuana initiatives in five cities — Ann Arbor, Detroit, Ferndale, Flint, and Traverse City — and by large margins.

There have been statewide initiatives trying to legalize the use of marijuana in 2000, 2002, and 2006, though all have failed.[1]

In late February, delegates at the Michigan Democratic Party Convention unanimously passed a resolution in favor of protecting patients from arrest.[2]

Support

The proponents of the initiative are the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care (MCCC)[3]

Other supporters include:

  • Marijuana Policy Project[4]
  • Michigan chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws[5]
  • StoptheDrugWar.com[6]
