Michigan State Senate
Elections for the office of Michigan State Senate were held in Michigan on November 2, 2010. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in these elections was May 11, 2010, and the primary Election Day was on August 3, 2010.

Michigan State Senators serve four-year terms concurrent with the governor's term of office. Terms for senators begin on January 1. Senators who have not served more than half of someone else's Senate term are eligible for two full terms (i.e. - eight years).

Although Michigan senators serve four-year terms, the elections are not staggered so that half of the seats are up for election every two years. Rather, all 40 seats are up for election on a 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018...schedule. 38 states have state senates where the terms of senators last for four years. Ten of these 38 states, including Michigan, feature non-staggered elections.

Of the 38 districts up for re-election, incumbents ran in 9 of them. In the remaining 29 districts, every incumbent was ineligible to run because of term limits.

Term limits

See also: State legislatures with term limits

The Michigan State Senate has been a term-limited state senate since Michigan voters approved Proposal B in 1992. Proposal B created Section 54 of Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, limiting state senators to 2 four-year terms. As with 5 other states, this is a lifetime limit.

There are 38 Michigan State Senators. In 2010, 25 who are current members were ineligible to run for the senate again in November.[1] The turn-over due to term limits applies to more than 65% of the total membership of the state's senate in one election season.[2]
