Kernell ran in the 2012 election for Tennessee House of Representatives, District 93. Kernell was defeated by incumbent Goffrey A. Hardaway in the August 2 primary election. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[1][2]

Kernell ran for re-election to the 93rd District seat in 2010. He was unopposed in the August 5 primary.[3] He defeated Republican Tim Cook in the general election on November 2, 2010.

On Nov. 4, 2008, Kernell won re-election to the 93rd District Seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives, defeating opponent Tim Cook (R).[4]
