Mike Machado, a Democratic member of the California State Assembly, successfully defeated a Republican attempt to recall him from office in August 1995.
The stated motivation for the recall attempt was that Machada voted for Willie Brown for assembly speaker after vowing during his election campaign that he would be "an independent voice".[1]
The vote in favor of retaining Rep. Machado was about 2-1 in his favor.
The election was the sixth recall effort against a California legislator since the state instituted the right of recall in 1911.
