Welcome to Minnesota on Ballotpedia!

Located in the Midwest region of the U.S., the state of Minnesota is known for a politically active citizenry, and populism has been a longstanding force among the state's political parties. Minnesota has a consistently high voter turnout, due in part to its liberal voter registration laws. In the 2008 U.S. presidential election, 77.9% of eligible Minnesotans voted—the highest percentage of any U.S. state—versus the national average of 61.2%. Having been admitted to the Union as the 32nd state in 1858, Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes." Currently, Minnesota has two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, a total of eight members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 134 members of the Minnesota House of Representatives and 67 members of the Minnesota State Senate. As of September 2013, Minnesota is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
