The 5th congressional district of Minnesota will hold an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 4, 2014.

Minnesota is one of 14 states that uses an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[1][2][3]

Heading into the election the incumbent is Keith Ellison (D), who was first elected in 2006.

Minnesota's 5th Congressional District includes portions of Hennepin and Ramsey counties in the central portion of the state.[4]

On November 2, 2010, Keith Ellison won re-election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Joel Demos (R), Lynne Torgerson (I), Tom Schrunk (I), and Michael James Cavlan (Independent Progressive) in the general election.[7]
