October 22, 2008 Missing Absentee Ballots in Racine

City of Racine election officials on Tuesday mailed absentee ballots to more than 300 city residents for a second time because a box of ballots is missing.[1]

Cause for Concern

A couple of hundred ballots apparently were lost in the mail, prompting a large number of calls from residents wondering why their ballot had not arrived as the election nears, said Janice Johnson-Martin, the Racine city clerk. Election officials responded Tuesday by sending a new ballot to 300 to 400 people who already had requested absentee ballots but so far have not returned one, Johnson-Martin said.[1]

Mystery

“We didn’t want anybody to say they didn’t get a chance to vote because the City of Racine couldn’t get their ballot out,” Johnson-Martin said. The whereabouts of the ballots, taken to the downtown Racine post office Oct. 9, is a mystery.[1]
