Welcome to Mississippi on Ballotpedia!

As with all other U.S. states and the federal government, Mississippi's government is based on the separation of legislative, executive and judicial power. Mississippi is one of only five states that elects its state officials in odd numbered years. Mississippi holds elections for these offices every four years in the years preceding Presidential election years. Named after the Mississippi River, Mississippi’s capital and largest city is Jackson. Currently, Mississippi has two Republican members of the U.S. Senate, a total of four members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 122 members of the Mississippi House of Representatives and 52 members of the Mississippi State Senate. As of September 2013, Mississippi is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
