Candidates wishing to run are required to file by the signature filing deadline of January 13, 2011. The primary elections were held on March 13, 2012.
The 2nd district is located in the western region of Mississippi and includes most of Jackson as well as the cities of Clarksdale, Greenville, Greenwood, Clinton and Vicksburg. Heading into the election the incumbent is Bennie Thompson (D), who has served since 1993.
This is the 2nd congressional district prior to the 2010 redistricting.

On November 2, 2010, Thompson won re election to the United States House of Representatives. He defeated Bill Marcy (R) and Ashley Norwood (Reform) in the general election.[3]
