Welcome to Missouri on Ballotpedia!

The current Constitution of Missouri, the fourth constitution for the state, was adopted in 1945. As with all other U.S. states and the federal government, Missouri’s government is based on the separation of legislative, executive and judicial power. Located in the Midwest region of the U.S. and nicknamed the “Show-me State,” Missouri (or the land currently known as Missouri) was acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase. Missouri’s capital is Jefferson City. Currently, Missouri has two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of seven members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 163 members of the Missouri House of Representatives and 34 members of the Missouri State Senate. As of September 2013, Missouri is one of 13 states that is under divided government and does not have a state government trifecta.
