The Missouri Director of Agriculture is a state executive position in the Missouri state government.

The director serves as head of the Department of Agriculture, which was established in 1933. The Department sets agriculture policy, assists farmers, and regulates the industry.

The mission statement of the department is "To serve, promote, and protect the agricultural producers, processors, and consumers of Missouri’s food, fuel, and fiber products."[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Richard Fordyce, who was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon in December 2013. Fordyce follows Harry Bozoian, who was appointed on Oc. 11, 2013 to replace fired previous officeholder Jon Hagler.[2][3]

The state Constitution addresses the office of director of agriculture in Article IV, the Executive Department.

Duties

The Missouri Department of Agriculture sets agriculture policy and provides assistance to farmers throughout the state. Its duties include consumer protection, public health roles, environmental advocacy, agricultural marketing, public information and awareness, and promoting new technology and new uses for Missouri’s agricultural goods.[4]

In 2013, the director's salary remained at $120,000.[6]
